Back to School

On August 21st the Valley East Lions Club (VELC) created a “Back to school program” for children in need, from kindergarten to college.

VELC purchased and handed out school supplies consisting of a backpack, lunch bags, crayons, pencils, etc., and included a listing of healthy snacks and suggested healthy lunches.

Three hairdressers were on site for free haircuts, providing 18 students a fresh look for the start of school. All of this was held at the Valley East Lions den.

Overall 25 children/teens attended along with a parent.  The families served were most appreciative and VELC is hoping on supplying 50 students next year.

Valley East Lions Club Chairperson for this event was Lion Sylvia Legrove-Emmell and co-chair was Lion Jeanne Lachance. An additional 8 Lions were on present for the day to assist.

Passing of a Giant in Lionism

Few can say they were as completely engaged in Lionism as PDG PCC Lion Gerry Albert. He personified Lionism. Gerry recommended every Lion spend at least 15 minutes per day learning about Lions. He felt Lionism was the means by which we could better our communities, be better employees and strengthen our character. And there’s no doubt about it, he was quite a character!

Lion Gerry passed away August 12th, in the early morning hours, but, his legacy lives on; in the CNIB Eye Van Tour, the Eye Care Centre, the RET Cam project and many others. Without his efforts on these projects, they may not have been successful.

While Lion Gerry called the Sudbury Lions Club and District A5 home, he spent many years working for Lions International, travelling throughout Canada and some of the US to start Clubs and strengthen existing Clubs. Many Clubs can testify to his sponsorship of their Club. It’s pretty safe to say, there isn’t a Club in the District for which Gerry didn’t have an affinity.

At 93, he was still a mentor, guide and leader who could be contacted anytime. Thank you Lion Gerry for all you did. You have earned your rest!

“Gerry” Albert

Azilda Lions Fundraiser for “Fight for Arnold”

Lions serve their communities and periodically take on special fundraisers.  The Azilda Lions hosted a spaghetti dinner to help raise money for “Fight for Arnold”.
Arnold, pictured below, has a form of cancer that he is obtaining treatment for outside of Canada.  Lion John and some young helpers served up spaghetti and garlic bread to a full house.

Capreol Lions Sponsors Free Skate

What is better than the word FREE?  Well, it’s even better when the word skate comes after it.
The Capreol Lions Club sponsored a Free Skate on Family day at the Capreol Arena.
A great time was had by all – kids and parents alike.  To make the day even better, the Lions provided free hot chocolate to all of those who came out to skate or attempt to skate as the case may be.  This is an annual event and much appreciated by the community.
Lion Norm was taste testing the free hot chocolate to make sure its just right. The remainder of Lions volunteers includes new Lion, Jocelyn, Lion Julie, Lion Dorthy and Lion Rick.

Capreol Lions – Capreol Cadets

The Capreol Lions are proud to announce the donation of $500 to the Capreol Irish Royal Canadian Army Cadet. The Cadets offer an excellent mentoring program where Cadets learn skills, within a structured atmosphere with training that also builds self-esteem. The Capreol Lions are very happy to have built a new partnership with the local Cadet Corp who have already helped out at one event. Lion Robin addressed those in attendance and thanked the Royal Canadian Military Officers for their service to the Country.  He also congratulated the Cadets on their commitment to the Cadet Corps. Lion Robin presented the cheque from the Capreol Lions to Donna Landry treasurer for the Cadets.
