Passing of a Giant in Lionism

Few can say they were as completely engaged in Lionism as PDG PCC Lion Gerry Albert. He personified Lionism. Gerry recommended every Lion spend at least 15 minutes per day learning about Lions. He felt Lionism was the means by which we could better our communities, be better employees and strengthen our character. And there’s no doubt about it, he was quite a character!

Lion Gerry passed away August 12th, in the early morning hours, but, his legacy lives on; in the CNIB Eye Van Tour, the Eye Care Centre, the RET Cam project and many others. Without his efforts on these projects, they may not have been successful.

While Lion Gerry called the Sudbury Lions Club and District A5 home, he spent many years working for Lions International, travelling throughout Canada and some of the US to start Clubs and strengthen existing Clubs. Many Clubs can testify to his sponsorship of their Club. It’s pretty safe to say, there isn’t a Club in the District for which Gerry didn’t have an affinity.

At 93, he was still a mentor, guide and leader who could be contacted anytime. Thank you Lion Gerry for all you did. You have earned your rest!

Azilda Lions Fundraiser for “Fight for Arnold”

Lions serve their communities and periodically take on special fundraisers.  The Azilda Lions hosted a spaghetti dinner to help raise money for “Fight for Arnold”.
Arnold, pictured below, has a form of cancer that he is obtaining treatment for outside of Canada.  Lion John and some young helpers served up spaghetti and garlic bread to a full house.

The fundraiser was a raffle of three different prizes donated from local merchants in town. Every gift was donated as was the printing of the tickets due to it being the Kirkland Lake Lions first venture.

Wade Hampton House

The Minnow Lake Lions Club donated $2000.00 to the Wade Hampton House operated by the March of Dimes in Sudbury.

Wade Hampton House is a community-based setting that offers 24-hour support to individuals who have experienced a moderate to severe brain injury. The staff members work together with residents to engage them in both their personal care and on-going rehabilitation goals. The services assist residents to regain skills and pursue areas of daily living that are meaningful to them while focusing on maximizing community integration and independence.

The March of Dimes is currently raising funds for an expansion of the house to accommodate more residents.

Minnow Lake Lions donated $500.00 to Northern Ontario School of Medicine topping their bursary to $24,800.00. The bursary was initiated in 2010 taking advantage of matching contributions from the government. The payout each year is based on approximately 5% of the capital amount and allows a medical student to realize his/her dream to study and hopefully practice in Northern Ontario.
