It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert
Lawrence on Nov.13, 2023
He was 82 and a lifelong Sudbury resident. He was the owner/operator of a few, vastly different, local businesses, culminating with Spee-Dee Print.

NEWFELD, Jake
Lion Jake served as Zone 47 North Chair in 1989-90 under Past District A5 Governor Lion Merv St Amand. The following year in 1990-91 he served as Region 47 Chair under Past District Governor John Moody.

He was also involved as a member of the District A5 Convention Advisory Committee for several terms, serving as Chair of the committee in 1992-1993 under Governor Bill Wuorinen. He also chaired the 1998 District A5 Convention hosted by Zone 47 North Clubs under Past District Governor Norm Bigras.

Lion Jake was very involved in the District’s Effective Speaking program chairing the committee for many years. He was last listed in this position in 2006-7 under PDG Lion Bob Kingsnorth. He was also involved in Effective Speaking through the Valley East Lions Club, either sponsoring local students and contests or hosting District finals. It was obvious to many of us that his passion to see young people strive to succeed in Effective Speaking kept him involved to promote and help educate the public and Lions about our involvement in this worthy program for our youth.

He was like many of us that look forward to our Annual District A5 Convention. The election of our officers for the coming year, the fellowship and enjoyment we share is something all Lions should work to attend to enjoy the many benefits. Renewing friendships and becoming familiar with activities and programs around the District from club members help to make us all better Lions.

He had a desire to know more about Lions and was enthusiastic to serve our District as a Zone and Region Chair so the knowledge he gained in these positions could be shared with others.

Lion Jake was a very active member of District A5 and of the Valley East Lions Club. He held several Board positions with the Valley East Lions Club over the years he was a member of the Club. Lion Jake held the positions of President, Secretary, Treasurer, Director, Membership Chairperson, Senior Supper Chairperson, and Children’s Christmas Party Chairperson. He was also involved in the Lions Children’s Christmas Telethon.

Lion Jake will be truly missed. Rest in peace.
WRIGHT, Margaret Mary
1925 - 2023

The family of Margaret wish to announce her passing in Temiskaming Hospital on Friday March 24,2023 at the young age of 97.

Margaret Mary McFarlane was born on April 26, 1925 in New Liskeard to Annie and Ross McFarlane.

Margaret met the love of her life, Allan John Wright and they married in New Liskeard. They spent 68 years together and enjoyed life to the utmost.

Margaret and Allan raised two daughters whom they loved dearly., Vicky married to Alvin Willard and Jane married to Rick Watson.

And then came grandchildren Scott and Angie Willard, Ryan and Amy Watson.

Mom and dad so loved their grandkids and spent hours taking them on secret picnics, time at the cottage, family dinners celebrating many birthdays, lots of card games, fishing , and doing what outdoor loving families do.

The cottage was their sanctuary and years were spent there, not only just the two summer months but during the winter we skidooed every Sunday right after Church.

And then there were the numerous winters they spent at their home in Florida, enjoying the warm sunshine, the golf and the many friends they made during their time there.

Mom devoted her time to many volunteer organizations over the years. She was the last remaining Charter Member of the New Liskeard Lionettes and also working tirelessly for the Cancer Society, groups in St Johns Anglican Church and many more.

Mom and dad loved their games of bridge with the Buckhams on Friday nites sometimes after a round of golf.

And her bridge clubs she belonged to was so enjoyable for her. Her bridge club girls had fun when they got together for cards and dessert.

Speaking of dessert……….no meal was complete unless there was dessert. And she was an amazing baker………….her butter tarts, pies, Christmas cake, cookies………and even this past week she was still loving her sweets.

Mom loved to be in her garden tending to her flowers even well into her 90’s, knitted many sweaters, socks and mitts for us and the church, golfed, curled, loved to skate, walked at least once a day and was still playing the piano at the Manor not that long prior to her passing.

But most of all was her love of beating her PSW Jen or her son-in-laws Alvin and Rick at a game of Crib. And she would be so proud when she skunked them…….and we all heard about it……….

Mom loved getting emails from her family and friends, checking her Facebook posts and making interesting comments on some of them. She did puzzles and played Solitaire daily on her iPad. WE were blessed that each nite Jane and I could chat with her on Facetime and tuck her in for the nite. The Grandkids and greats grandkids had fun chatting with her on Facetime as well. They so loved their Gramma and GG.

Family was more important than anything else

We all ,family and friends, have been subject to Moms curiosity. She loved to ask questions, be in the know, keep up to date on everything from what everyone was doing to world events but that is how you learn and grow. Her passion in every aspect of life was an inspiration to those around her. She did set the bar quite high for all of us to follow

WE all learned amazing life skills from her……..how to be determined, stay strong and be kind to all.

And we thank all the people that touched Moms life from family and friends, her Doctors Pat Logan and Spencer Wilson and caregivers at the hospital and Manor. You all were very special to Mom

And so today we all say thank you to our Matriarch

Vicky and Alvin, Scott, Angie & John, Emily and Chelsea

Jane and Rick, Ryan & Megan, Oscar, Arlo, Esme. Amy and Marc, Ava, Keanan, Kade, Kenna as well as many nieces and nephews are all here to carry on the many wonderful traditions and life skills we learned from the best. Thank you Mom, we love you and will miss you but we will all make you proud.

He was particularly proud of having mentored many Cochrane youth to the beauty of long distance training/racing.

It is impossible to over-emphasize the importance of the Claude/Carolle team toward the successful completion of over 41 years of chiropractic practice. Without any exaggeration it would have been impossible without the contribution of each meshed with the other. In short, it has been an honor providing health services to Cochrane and surrounding areas. We give a tip of the hat to Dr. Danielle Mercier who is continuing the tradition of quality care at our original Fifth Avenue site.

No arm twisting was necessary for Claude to accompany Carolle the equivalent of almost 5 years of continuous backpacking through more than 120 countries across 7 continents. We lost count of the number of invaluable life lessons acquired during the course of this odyssey.

A special thanks to Dr. Joey Tremblay, Dr. Susan G. Parsons, Judy Ives and all the nursing staff for the excellent care provided to Claude.

LITTLE, John Graham – Died on September 15th 2022, after an incredibly brief battle with Leukemia. He was in his 75th year.

He was a Brother to Stuart and AnnaLou, Uncle to many and friend to all he met. He spent 40 years in Kirkland Lake as a business man, and his last 10 years in Muskoka, closer to his cherished family. John was a man of many careers over the years, but his most beloved jobs were being a husband, father and grandfather. With his dearest wife Lesia of 52 years, he enjoyed numerous travels all over the world. His passion was gardening, and the gardens grew bigger and more beautiful every year. He very much looked forward to each spring, so he could add to the garden. Never to shy away from a conversation with his neighbours, the many walks he took through Pine Ridge lasted for hours. John was so proud of his children Pamela and Robert, and equally proud of his son-in law John and daughter-in-law Suzana. The birth of his grandson Matthew was the spark that motivated John to move away from his home in Kirkland Lake to be closer to his family. John taught Matthew the meaning of a “well earned buck!” And Matthew cherished every moment he spent with Grandpa. Pam enjoyed her father’s “banter” and they could discuss anything. He championed all her quests and always made her feel that she was capable of anything - what a gift. He was a loving, supportive father, and his son Robert considered him his best friend. As the years progressed, Robert always kept John up to date with the latest technology and gadgets he loved so much. John also supported his communities in many capacities. He was a Life Member of the Kirkland Lake Lions Club, he sat on numerous Boards, and especially enjoyed his time with KL 4 Seasons Yard Care with Community Living. John appreciated his many coffee buddies over the years. He outlived so many of them, and now it was his time. John’s was a life well-lived.
URBAN, Irene
In the 1930s, a child was born on the outskirts of a mining town. Cobalt was growing amid the calamity of the Great Depression and soon after World War II. This young girl along with her siblings and friends had to endure the harsh living conditions of the time. As a result, those from that era learned to be grateful and benevolent. Their resilience shaped a community that was unique in so many ways. Perhaps it is because they learned that the silver was not in the rock but in the clouds.

Irene Urban (nee David) was born on April 23, 1933, to Jewell and Dorothy David. She was the third child in a family of nine and spent her early years attending Cobalt Public School and Cobalt High School. She later went on to graduate from Laurentian University with a Bachelor of Arts and spent time teaching at Cobalt High School. Irene was greatly involved in the community. She served as a town councilor, recreation director, and was a supporter of the Cobalt Figure Skating Club, minor baseball, and minor hockey. A founder of the Cobalt Home Support program, she was an enthusiastic proponent of aiding the seniors and providing for their needs.

Irene was a life-long learner who always loved to read, watch documentaries, and took up painting at the age of 70 years old. A remarkable woman to say the least. She will be remembered for her resilience and the impact that she had on countless members of the community.

Predeceased by her beloved husband Louis and eight siblings, Donald, Larry, James, Ronald, Linda, Eric, Gary and her nephew Eric. Irene is survived by her children Lorri, David, Karen (Dave), James (Kayla) and Don; her brother Wayne (Lynn), and sister-in-law, Joy. She will be warmly remembered by her grandchildren Christopher (Jess) Settino, Alana (Robbie Wirth) Settino, Louis Urban, Madelin Urban, great-grandchildren Lyric and Kadence Wirth, James and Sophia Settino, her sisters-in-law Joy and Aline along with her nieces, nephews, friends and family.

The family would like to convey a special thanks to all the EMS staff, the Temiskaming Hospital staff, and the Cobalt Fire Department, who were often called upon and responded with great care in allowing her to continue her journey.

When Darkness does enfold you
Take heed of what’s in sight
Your hopes and dreams will guide you
In wisdom there is light

We have lost many of our matriarchs but certainly we should not lose this lesson. Through work and education dreams can be achieved. That social mobility needs to coincide with social harmony. That your neighbor is your friend, and their children must be cared for as you would your own. These core values epitomized Irene Urban. She loved her house, friends, and family. Above all, she loved Cobalt!

Mrs Urban's final care has been entrusted to Buffam Leveille Funeral Home. A memorial visitation will be held at the Buffam Leveille Funeral Home on Saturday September 24, 2022 from 2:00 - 5:00pm. Memorial contributions can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice. Condolences and contributions may be left at www.buffamleveille.com

APRIL 23, 1936 – MARCH 8, 2020
After leaving Upper Canada College, David pursued a career in forestry, one that varied from tree care to teaching, from logging to research, and branched out into pool installation and mink ranching. While attending Ranger School, Dave met Josephine Kylie below a fire tower in Central Ontario. That chance encounter led to a romance that saw the celebration of their sixtieth anniversary in June of last year. Dave could, and did, talk to anyone, learning more about you upon first meeting than you may have shared with your best friend. Always eager to be involved, Dave was, at various times, the manager of the Sault College hockey team, a warden at St. Luke's Cathedral, a member of: The Retriever Club, Toastmasters, The Sault College Men's Choir, The Rod and Gun Club, The Woodlot Association, and Lion's Club (the latter for over forty years). His big smile and hearty laugh will be sorely missed by wife Jo, sons Jim (Licia), John (Lianda), Brian (Danielle), grandchildren Ben, Gareth, Olivia, Rhys, Romey, Sadie and Ivor, many friends, and the large extended family an only child was thrilled to join. Friends may visit at St. Luke's Cathedral on Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 1:00 pm to 2:45 pm. Service at the church at 3:00 pm; Rev. Christian Pichette officiating. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Luke's Cathedral ACW, or the Algoma Highlands Conservancy would be appreciated by the family. June 25, 1940 - August 13, 2019
It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of William Hay on August 13th. He was surrounded by family and friends in his final weeks, and passed away peacefully at 79 years of age.

Bill was a thoughtful, shy individual in his younger years. He developed a more outgoing personality as he grew older, becoming a sociable conversationalist of some note (with an endless supply of entertaining stories, to which many of you can attest). He could converse on almost any topic with experts and non-experts alike. A voracious reader, passionate and knowledgeable regarding history and politics, above all else he loved music, for which he had an encyclopedic memory. If you wanted to know who wrote it, who sang it and when it went number one, you asked Bill.

He was also an avid lover of the outdoors, who retired to his beloved farm on Manitoulin Island. Frequently seen walking with his axe or chainsaw, he was a gentle giant who enjoyed gardening, planting trees, picking his apples and plums, cutting the grass, outwitting the groundhogs, practicing his golf swing... Most of all he loved sitting in his outdoor lounge listening to classic tunes.

His final year was challenging, but we are so grateful for the gracious care he was given as the end approached. The nurses, PSW's and hospital staff were wonderful, in particular we will never forget Danielle, doctor Nel, Lisa (aka Dorothy!), and nurse Kelly.

Bill was a committed husband and he leaves his loving wife of 47 years Barbara, as well as his devoted daughter Shawna (Lars), his grateful son Garrett (Robin), and his two treasured grandchildren Leif and Gala. He's also very missed by his surviving brothers Robert (Aline), David, Douglas (Bev) and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, in-laws and outlaws. He was predeceased by his mother, father, sisters Mary-Jane (Joe), Ruthie (Keith), and his brother Sandy, who left him far too young.

We love you, Dad. You taught us all so much through your shining example. Your love and support we will carry with us forever.
