Lions Thank Estaire Wanup Volunteer Firefighters

Lions Club of Sudbury Support Volunteer Fire Service

The Lions Club of Sudbury recognized the Estaire Wanup Volunteer Fire Department for their bravery and dedication to assisting and serving your community and the people who live there.

President Lion Gerry Corby and member Lion Sandra Del-Pivo Sauve attended the fire department to present them with a $1,000 cheque from the club.

One of the members of the Lions Club of Sudbury has a cottage off one of the roads covered by the Estaire Wanup Volunteer Fire Department. They were able to see first hand, the efforts of the small fire department, to save the homes in that area as well as assisting the MNR battle hundreds of acres of bush fires that flared up a couple of weeks prior. While the MNR fought from the air, the fire department had their pumps at the ready for use at ground level.

When the topic of new business came up, another member brought forward that a donation should be made to the Estaire Wanup volunteer fire service. This is a volunteer service. As part of our community service, it was imperative to ensure those who stand for us are able to going forward.

What the service has done in the past, is currently doing and will do in the future deserves to be recognized. We commend you for your bravery and dedication to assisting and serving your community and the people who live there.

New Liskeard Lions Club 2020

I’m sure when a person begins volunteering with a community organization, the last thing on their mind would be celebrating that milestone 65 years later. Such is the case of Lion Ron Sutton of the New Liskeard Lions Club. The Lions club celebrated with six of their members on the longevity of their service to the community.

Ron Sutton – 65 years, Gordon Spencer – 50 years, Keith Windsor – 45 years, Archie Brazeau – 40 years, Rory Moore – 20 years and Ron Prestage – 20 years.

That’s an incredible 240 years of service and that’s just from these few who are celebrating milestones. The impact of service in a community can’t be unvalued.

Thanks to all of these incredible individuals and all of the club members who ensure that ‘where there’s a need, there’s a Lion’.

Minnow Lake – Supporting Seniors During COVID-19

Submitted by: Lion Brenda McLay of Minnow Lake Lions

Funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program in collaboration with United Way Centraide North East Ontario/Nord-est de l’Ontario, the Minnow Lake Lions received a grant to use for assistance to seniors during this pandemic.  The Lions partnered with Our Children Our Future to give out this money to deserving seniors.  A lot of people may not know that many seniors are raising their grandchildren.  When they thought that they were saving for their retirement for 2 people, they now have households of anywhere from 4-9 people and could just use a little bit of help.  The Lions purchased grocery gift cards to give to the senior clients of Our Children Our Future and a few other seniors that the club members knew that just needed a little help.  Thank you to everyone their ongoing support of the seniors in our community.

Lions Foundation has been hit hard by COVID-19. The training facility is closed but expenses continue. Many corporations have had to withdraw from funding due to their own difficulties. For over 34 years, the Pet Valu Walk for Dg Guides has been the major fund raiser which due to social distancing has been cancelled. We are struggling to replace it with VIRTUAL WALK on May 31st. The Elliot Lake Lions Club is urging you to help us out. You can join us by going to www.walkfordogguides,com  and wander around the web site or go directly to our page by clicking: https://www.walkfordogguides.com/locations/team.cfm?ID=1685

Spreading Warmth to Northern Residents

Congratulations Ferris Lions Club for ensuring warmth for our children. It definitely takes a village to raise a child and you’ve shown us how quickly something so vital can be undertaken and completed! Thank you Lions John Marcil for sharing this experience! Please see Lion John’s account of this project below.

By Lion John Marcil

As a Lion’s Club we received many requests to help and it’s not easy to choose which requests to support. In November 2019, the Ferris Lions learned of an opportunity to help a number of children in a small community in Northern Ontario this winter.

The opportunity was to provide winter jackets, scarves, toques and mittens to elementary students in Pickle Lake, ON. With the support of many partners and the community of North Bay at large, within three weeks we collected 5 full hockey bags of warm outerwear for these children. In total we collected 250 pairs of mittens and gloves, 160 toques, 50 pairs of socks, 53 scarves, 11 pairs of snow pants 20 infant snowsuits, 5 pairs of infant boots, 37 winter jackets and 300 chapsticks.

Pickle Lake is 1,618.5 km away from North Bay, ON that’s an 18 hour and 45 minute drive. This remote community is the farthest community you can drive to by road in the remote areas of the north.

Now that we had this massive amount of items, how were we going to get them all the way to Pickle Lake? Well with a number of very dedicated Santa helpers the five enormous hockey bags traveled from one stop to the next and changed hands several times over the period of a week until finally arrived in the school gymnasium.

This just goes to show that when you have a strong group of Lion’s members , big or small, and partners, any project can be successful. It doesn’t hurt to have a little Christmas Spirit working for you as well.
